It is with great humility and pride that Achieving Community Tasks Successfully (ACTS) celebrates 10 years of service. We have become an organization with successful grant awards, partnerships with Environmental NGO’s (non-governmental organizations) for technical expertise, other community-based nonprofits and expanded our reach within the community at large. We give Recognition and Thanks to individuals that saw the potential and shared their experiences and expertise unselfishly. It is that Servant Spirit that we continue the work. The mentorship of the HBCU-CBO Gulf Coast Equity Consortium is our blueprint. The Communiversity approach to establishing an equitable relationship between community and university in the conduct of research and community action. It was and is the “light” for citizen science and owning our own data.

ACTS initiated the first community-led air monitoring network in Texas. Through our collaboration with Texas Southern University (TSU) and Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), our partnership with the Data to Action Group has led to a collective of community-based organizations working together to provide hyperlocal air monitoring in black and brown communities. Air Alliance Houston began this work some time ago and it is a model for us all.

The work is not done. Unfortunately, too many communities in Houston continue to identify new threats impacting our health and quality of life. ACTS has successfully delayed the approval of two MSD (municipal setting designations) – ground water contamination sites near our community. To fend off these sites with known groundwater contamination, took technical expertise, legal consultants and a community that stands together. We are most appreciative of the City of Houston listening to the community concerns.

Flooding, Trucks, Trucks,Food Insecurities, and Project 11 remain on the agenda – so stay on this journey with us.
